What do you think of when you hear "21st Century Learner?" Cows, right? White Pine Middle School is a beautiful facility spanning 65 acres with 1200 6th-8th grade students but has very few COWs–Computers on Wheels. We recently adopted a new 6th/7th grade science curriculum and 6th grade math curriculum. Adopting the curriculum heightens our awareness that lessons requiring current technology integration are inaccessible. Instructional choices are limited to old technology instead of utilizing sets of student laptops capable of interacting with Promethean boards.

How this Grant will Help:

Moo-ove over old PCs, we are building a pasture, ahem, school full of COWs–Computers on Wheels: One for each science/math teacher to create future scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians with requisite 21st century skills. A COW for each teacher means ALL White Pine students would benefit from this grant. Help us gather a herd of COWs and "beef" up our technology via the Clorox Grant.

North Elementary

Bring 21st Century technology to North Elementary

Brighton, CO

Program Detail:

North Elementary is located in the heart of Brighton Co., which is a low-income community. The school serves approximately 280 students with the majority being on free and reduced lunch at about 83%. Our school is predominantly English Language Learners about 54% and 15% of our students receive extra support services. Only 53% of our students are proficient in Reading at this time. We feel that having access to technology is a need for our students to excel and have a chance to go onto college. Technology would be beneficial in helping us achieve our goal of improving Reading scores as well as preparing them for their future. North has a dedicated staff and our teachers work hard to meet all the diverse needs of our students, but we lack the tools and technology advances to make it possible.

How this Grant will Help:

This grant would bring technology to our students and allow our school to be competitive with other districts. Most of our students do not own computers and bringing technology will give them the opportunity to expand their learning. Our teachers are still using overheads to teach to their students, which are quickly becoming obsolete. Each teacher only has one personal computer in each room and our TVs only play VHS. Additional computers would be useful so we could use them as a reading center to have students read books online or use learning games. In our library we do not have any computers for students to look up information. It would be wonderful to have students learn how to research and write reports about the world around them. This grant will give our students the opportunity to use 21st century technology and improve their learning. Improving our schools technology will open new horizons for our students and keep them competitive in this evolving world of technology.

Bristol Central High School

Help us keep the music alive and renovate our auditorium!

Bristol, CT

Program Detail:

The auditorium at Bristol Central High School is a place of development, creativity, self discovery and talent. It is a place where magic is made using technology from the 70's, lights from the Middle Ages and seats from Abe Lincol's day. The stage is in dire need of restoration. The lift we used to hang lights has been condemned by the Board of Ed as a hazardous piece of equipment. We have been forced to hold together our theater with sometimes little more than hope and duct tape. Through the years the repeated use and "maintenance" of our stage and auditorium has left it in a deplorable state. We have 9 working lights, no microphones and no sound board. We produce quality shows and have unbelievable talent; unfortunately our space doesn't match our capabilities and certainly not our aspirations. Most enhancement programs that utilize the auditorium space are not included in the curriculum budget; therefore this grant is the only opportunity to help our declining program.

How this Grant will Help:

The auditorium is the one area of the school that is used by everyone- athletes, musicians, artists, politicians and community leaders. The funds from this grant will not only change the lives of those involved with the music department but can impact the entire city. This space is used for theater productions, pageants, musical performances, the pep rally, the graduation commencement, community organizations and audio/visual courses. The funds from this grant will impact thousands of people in the school, the community and neighboring towns. The auditorium is a sanctuary for so many students. It is a home away from home, the one place many can go when life falls apart. The improved state of the theater will be a "Home" makeover to so many. Those involved with any form of musical expression, drama, public speaking, charity event or community work will benefit from this opportunity. The funds from this project will allow us to put money back into a place that has given us so much.

Butler Elementary

Make our playground handicap accessible

Butler, OH

Program Detail:

Butler Elementary is one of two elementary schools in the Clear Fork Valley School District servicing grades K-5. Built in 1915, our facility is utilized to educate all the special needs/multi-handicap children in our district. Butler Elementry has an enrollment of 353 children in grades K-5. Of these students, 18% (or 63 students) have disabilities. With 53.89% of our students qualifying for free or reduced meals and 49.9% of our residents classified by the U.S. government as "economically disadvantaged" it is difficult to turn to our community time & time again for help. Families are making very tough decisions as to where their money must go. Receiving a grant would enable us to upgrade our playground. There will no longer be children "on the sidelines"; as they too will be able to participate and interact with classmates. This strengthens self-esteem, promotes physical activity amongst all students; not to mention empower young minds to set & reach the unachievable!

How this Grant will Help:

Our outdated playground was never designed to be handicap accessible. It's absolutely heart wrenching to look into the eyes of a child who wants so badly to experience all the excitement of recess, yet can only watch from a window/sideline. Do you remember the days when recess meant everything & the playground was your "kingdom"? Do you remember feeling the wind as you pumped your legs on that swing to get higher than your best friend? Imagine the heartbreak of a disabled child. A simple "rite of passage" during the formidable years of childhood is denied. Our community has tried to get this project funded, but with the economy, we cannot raise the funding necessary for a project of such magnitude. Thus, our children can only remain "observers". They cannot interact with their classmates, forge & strengthen friendships, promote confidence & self-assurance that stay with you throughout life. With help, we can fill the valley with the echoes of children's laughter.

Rancho Buena Vista High School

Modernize the Performing Arts Center into a state of the art facility!

Program Detail:

The RBVHS music and theater programs have made a rich impact on the school, community, and world for 25 years. Despite old equipment and a lack of financial support, these arts programs challenge students to perform at the highest caliber. The band receives superior marks at competitions, and RBV students have represented in the CBDA all-state honor band. They have performed in China, Australia, throughout Europe, and in the Rose Parade. Theater students win top awards from MACY, CETA, & the International Thespian Society; they travel to London & New York for enrichment. Our rigorous arts curriculum prepares students for AP & IB tests. Students involved in the arts excell in other educational disciplines. Our students not only become professional musicians & actors, music & drama teachers, they become successful in many fields. Through the arts they build self esteem, responsibility, and skill in their craft. The arts experiences at RBVHS make inspiring changes in student's lives.

How this Grant will Help:

School arts programs often get donated & used equipment, but we believe industry standard technology tools will create the best environment for our students to learn. We aim to modernize our audio & visual systems in the Performing Arts Center, provide recording & mixing equipment for students to use during & after performances, implement specialized software, and upgrade computer systems. In our programs, students run the equipment-not adults. These improvements will not only benefit the music & theater programs, but the color guard, dance, choir, Ballet Folklorico, and film programs as well. Winning this grant will make a positive impact on all 2,591 students and their families in the RBVHS community, as every student - including the 46% of our student body who come from impoverished households - are required to take an art class or attend a performance. The arts inspire. Help us continue to effectively inspire our students to excel in life through the arts

Country Isles Elementary

Replace the intermediate playground used by our 2nd - 5th graders

Country Isles Elementary was built in 1987 and the playground equipment is nearly as old. The playground consists of a large sand pit with no protection from the sun. Most of the equipment is metal and, as you can imagine sitting in the Florida sun, it gets so hot that the children can’t to play on it. The metal is peeling and the plastic slides are stained and faded. The surrounding area is dirt so many choose to sit on the concrete walkway in the shade of the building while outside. We have 33 classes (approx 690 children) cycling through for recess each day. Living in Florida, our children have outdoor recess the entire year. We do not have an indoor gym. Country Isles has many needs. In recent years, PTA fundraising efforts have been directed towards classroom technology that the school district no longer funds. Our technology needs are an ongoing outlay that leaves no capital for playground improvement.

Prairie Ridge Elementary

Improve our technology components to increase student learning.

Shawnee, KS

Program Detail:

Prairie Ridge Elementary school is part of De Soto USD 232 in Shawnee, KS. We serve students in kindergarten through 5th grade, with a current population of 538 students. Staff consists of 43 certified and 20 classified members. In addition to general education classrooms, we serve students in many areas. Specials teachers provide instruction 1 hour each week in the areas of music, PE, art, tech, and library. Special education students receive instructional minutes to increase knowledge and skill levels. The Center-Based program houses the district program for students diagnosed with autism and other moderate-to-severe impairments. Gifted Education has a home At Prairie Ridge that serves five schools. We have 1 Reading Specialist and 1 aide. In PLSIT, teams meet weekly in grade level cohorts with the building School Improvement Specialist, Counselor, and Principal. PRE students have made AYP and have full accreditation status.

How this Grant will Help:

When our school opened, we were on the cutting edge of technology. Staff have laptops which work on docking stations, and limits teacher mobility. Due to funding concerns at state and federal levels, we have been unable to maintain our momentum. Laptops that were once state-of-the-art have been used and reached a point of longevity that renders them difficult to effectively operate. We hope to provide students access to Smart Boards, Tablets, iPads, Doc Cams, Skype, and updated laptops. We would like to provide desktop computers in a dedicated computer lab. Because we are a school of not only general education learners, but also home to a full spectrum of Special Education students, we also wish to utilize programs for re-teaching and extension. Many of these programs operate through software-based means, which are beyond our current reality. We appreciate your consideration.
